Mass Audubon’s Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Norfolk Community League (NCL) are gearing up for the 5th Annual Wood Duck Derby taking place on Saturday, October 6. During the fall tradition, wood ducks (aka rubber ducks), which have been adopted by supporters of the fundraiser, will splash into the Stony Brook Pond and race downstream towards the finish line to win great prizes for participants. The first duck to cross the finish line wins the grand prize of $750!
“It is amazing to see so many people come to cheer on their ducks! It really has become an exciting and much anticipated community event for the children and adults who show up every year,”said Melissa Dugas, Committee Chair. It takes approximately 5 minutes for the ducks to race down the waterway and cross the finish line, with the crowd cheering loudly for their ducks.
This annual fundraiser benefits Mass Audubon’s Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Norfolk community. In past years, the money has gone to supporting Stony Brook’s youth and adult programs to help continue its educational mission as well as other community organizations like the Norfolk Police and Fire department, Norfolk schools and the Recreation Department.
The Wood Duck Derby takes place during the Stony Brook Fall Fair, which is an annual family event held at Stony Brook. The event could not be a success without the support of generous community partners including: Prime Acura Westwood, L.L. Bean, Bass Pro Shops, Dental Associates of Walpole, Coldwell Banker (Kim Williams and Marissa Muldowney Team), Carpentry by Tom Antonellis, Leaf Filter Gutter Protection, Dover Trucking, Foxboro Federal Savings, Medfield Veterinary Clinic, Walsh’s Greenhouse, and Wegmans.
