Alumni Award $85,000 in Scholarships

The Hopedale High School Alumni Association presented 28 scholarships totaling more than $50,000 at the Class of 2018 graduation ceremony on June 2nd, along with $30,000 in scholarships to Class of 2017 graduates who are now in their first year of college. Vice President Karen Mazzarelli, who presented the 2018 awards, said the Association manages scholarships provided by families, reunion classes, donations, and from the estate of Glendon and Dorothy (Dutcher) Horne. “We are very happy that through the generosity of so many we can help bright and promising Hopedale students reach their academic goals,” she said. The following is the list of scholarships.
The Philip Roberts Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $400 to a student who has enhanced the school with their musical ability was presented to Cassidy Adams.
The Albert C. Sayles Scholarship in the amount of $400 to a student with an interest in mathematics and who shows leadership on and off the athletic field was presented to Andrew Doran.
TheDianne Barron Scholarship in the amount of $500 to a student pursuing a career in business was presented to Colin Sughrue.
The Henry L. Cyr Scholarship for Patriotism and Service to their school, community and to our Nation in the amount of $500 was presented to Zachary Merchant.
The Samara Hagopian Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 to a student who will pursue a career in the arts, fine arts, or industrial design was presented to Tyler Welch.
The Shoghere Markarian Scholarship in the amount of $500 to students who have been active in band or chorus and who will attend a college of music or minor in music were presented to Carissa Turenne and Amina Hukanovic.
The Paul Gibbs Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for academic achievement, character and service to others was presented to Morgan Foley.
The Patrick Keaney Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student, with a financial need, whose skill as an artist has enhanced their school and community was presented to Kendall Zonghi.
The Elizabeth K. Midgley Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student who demonstrates leadership qualities, initiative and accomplishment in the arts and sciences was presented to Brittany Dupuis.
The Regina Stare Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student who plans to pursue a degree in education and is involved in community service and extracurricular activities related to helping others was presented to Lilla MacDonald.
The Hopedale High School Alumni Association 130th Anniversary Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to a student who has excelled in school and is the child of a Hopedale High graduate was presented to Jordyn D’Aniello.
The Bettina M. Cyr Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to a student who has shown a love of literature and excellence in writing was presented to Rachel Szemethy.
The Alumni Association Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 for academic achievement, leadership and service were presented to Ryan Coyle, Brittany Dupuis, Marissa Luchini, Elizabeth Swanson, and Rachel Szemethy.
The Alumni Betty Butcher Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for dedication to their studies and financial need was presented to Danielle Brown.
The Alumni Lucy Day Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for academics, leadership and service was presented to Melissa Davis.
The Glendon and Dorothy Horne Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 for academic excellence, leadership and service were presented to Jake Kracinovich and Benjamin Tahmoush.
The Glendon and Dorothy Horne Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 for academic excellence, leadership and significant personal achievement were awarded to Cassidy Adams, Catherine Hodgens, Jennifer Holland, Amina Hukanovic, Jacob Weaver, and Joshua Weaver.
Alumni Association scholarship committee member Geri Cyr noted that $3,000 Horne Memorial Scholarships were presented to Class of 2017 graduates Brenna Ashby, Camryn Cherella, Catherine Clement, Gerard Crepeau, Ava Giatras, Lauren Kelly, Mitchell Siefring, Cameron Smith, Emily Waldman, and John Waswill. Mrs. Cyr said “The academic success these students have had in their first year of college shows that a Hopedale education has prepared them well for college and beyond” and added that the Alumni also provided $40,000 in grants for classroom teachers in the three Hopedale Public Schools over the past year.
