Alumni Present Scholarships at Class of 2016 Graduation

The Hopedale High School Alumni Association presented 19 scholarships at the June 4th Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2016 totaling more than $40,000. In addition, the Alumni gave $36,000 to members of Hopedale’s Class of 2015 who have completed their first year of college.
Alumni Vice President Karen (Rose) Mazzarelli presented the following scholarships at the recent Commencement:
The Albert C. Sayles Scholarship of $400 to a student with an interest in Mathematics and who shows leadership on and off the athletic field was presented to Nicholas Spinelli.
The Dianne Barron Scholarship of $500 to a student pursuing a career in Business was presented to James D’Urso.
The Henry L. Cyr Scholarship for Patriotism and Service to their school, community and to our Nation of $500 was presented to Thomas Spillers.
The Samara Hagopian Memorial Scholarship of $500 to a student who will pursue a career in the arts, fine arts, or industrial design was presented to Michael DiCiaccio.
The Sandy Lovejoy Class of 1963 Scholarship of $500 to a student pursuing a career in Nursing was presented to Kristina Avery.
The Shoghere Markarian Scholarship of $500 to a student who has been active in band or chorus and who will attend a college of Music or minor in Music was presented to Jennifer Chiarello.
Alumni Association Scholarships of $1,000 each for academic achievement, leadership and service were presented to Maia Banayan, Sarah Clement, Colleen Kincaid, Julia Stevens, and Joshua Tomaso.
The Paul Gibbs Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 for academics, leadership and service was presented to Kevin Daniels.
The Lucy Day Scholarship of $2,000 for academics, leadership and service was presented to Molly McMahon.
Glendon and Dorothy (Dutcher) Horne Memorial Scholarships of $5,000 for academic excellence, leadership and significant personal achievement were presented to Katie Commerford, Cameron Hill, Jillian Hopkins, Nicholas Spinelli, Nicole Spinelli, and Victoria VanZile.
Horne Scholarships of $3,000 have been awarded to 12 members of the Class of 2015 who have completed their first year of college: Carly Alden, Alexa DaFonte, Cameron Davis, Mark Espanet, Stephen Foley, Maureen Hodgens, Collin Keaney, Megan Kelly, Joseph Rice, Savannah Szemethy, Ryan Wollensak, and Jinga Xu.
In offering congratulations to the graduates, Mrs. Mazzarelli noted that the Alumni Association has given scholarships for more than 80 years and in 2015 also began awarding academic grants of $35,000 per year to classroom teachers at the three Hopedale Public Schools. She added that donations to the scholarship and grant funds are always needed and referred readers to the Alumni website hopedale-alumni.org for information about contributions and about Life Membership in the Association.
