Ashland Documentary Film & Discussion Series Explores New Insights Into How Children Learn, January12

Issue Date:
January, 2017
Article Body:

The Ashland Documentary Film & Discussion Series will present the film, Under Construction from the Annenberg Learner film series Minds of Our Own, on Thursday, January 12, 7- 9 pm at the Ashland Library, Community Room, 66 Front St. A series of portraits of teaching shows how six teachers from across the country are working to revamp their teaching and their schools, and are struggling against a variety of obstacles that might thwart their efforts. These teachers are working to undo the myths about learning inherent in their school systems, and are truly the heroes who will shape our children’s future for life in the Information Age.
Based on recent research, as well as the pioneering work of Piaget and others, the film series Minds of Our Own shows that many of the things we assume about how children learn are simply not true. For educators and parents, these programs bring new insight to debates about education reform. Minds of Our Own is an Annenberg Learner film produced by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
The Ashland Documentary Film & Discussion Series meets at 7-9 pm in the Ashland Library, Community Room, every second Thursday of the month. The films are sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Library. For more information, call the library, 508-881-0134, or visit www.friendsoftheapl.com.
