Bark For Life Brings Dogs Into Cancer Fight

Issue Date:

Article Body:

It’s true that you can’t bring a dog to any of the many American Cancer Society Relay For Life events held in the region. However, thanks to a dedicated Relay volunteer, your pooch is welcomed locally to promenade at his or her own event!
Bark For Life is a canine event that takes its lead from the Relay For Life. There’s a course to walk, vendors to visit, demonstrations to see, music, gift baskets to take chances on, and much more! This May 20th, the first annual Metrowest Bark For Life will take place at Kidde-Fenwal, 400 Main St in Ashland! Visit bitly.com/metrowestBFL for more information. It will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. All Metrowest residents are encouraged to attend!
Relay For Life Tri-Chair Marlene Custodio wanted to do something different this year. She serves as the Fundraising and Mission chair for her Relay, but, inspired by her own four-legged friend Blackie, wanted to include dogs. “Dogs, cats, and other pets benefit from the research we help the American Cancer Society fund with the Relay events. I wanted to include at least dogs in some way.”  So, she set about looking for a venue that could host such an event.
Typically, a Relay event sticks within the confines of the towns they cover (in Marlene’s case, Natick, Framingham and Sherborn). However, Bark For Life events are few-and-far between, so Marlene looked into a venue that would be large enough and would include all of Metrowest. She had taken part in the car shows hosted at the Kidde Fenwal property in Ashland, and the folks there were all too happy to oblige. With that, the Metrowest Bark For Life was born.
Plans have been moving forward at a rapid pace, and so far, it include vendors, a State Police K-9 demonstration, speakers on canine cancer, a DJ, concessions, gift baskets, and more on the way.
