Fifteen volunteers, including Dorothy Nail of Ashland, gathered together to create handmade quilts at The Power of the Quilt Project’s annual MLK Day community service quilt-a-thon. In all, 14 colorful quilts were finished and will be given to men and women undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the Harvard Vanguard Medical Center in Kenmore Square, Boston.
Nail sewed two of seven “quilt tops,” which will be finalized at the spring quilt-a-thon on April 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Area Church (UUAC), First Parish of Sherborn. The Power of the Quilt Project, first established in 2003, is one of the UUAC’s many service and justice ministries. The work of volunteer sewers and quilters from area towns contribute to about 200 quilts for distribution annually. Some are given to Project Linus to bring warmth and comfort to young children staying in hospitals or shelters.
