Ellice Historic Schoolhouse Investigation

Presented by: Meg Wilkes, Millis Historical Commission Sponsored by the Millis Cultural Council and supported by the Millis Public Library and Millis Schools. Come help kick-off the week-long event – the Ellice Historic Schoolhouse Investigation. Dr. Meg Wilkes, an archaeologist and member of the Millis Historical Commission, will talk about Heritage Preservation in the 21st century. Using the Ellice Historic School House project as an example, Dr. Wilkes will talk about the processes behind heritage management: site selection, research design, and site investigations. Over the past year the Historical Commission completed a feasibility study for preservation of the building. Part of this process included 3D laser scanning and ground penetrating radar project mapping the Ellice Schoolhouse that mapped the building and surrounding landscape in 3D. Dr. Wilkes will make presentations throughout the week at the Millis schools talking about the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM principles) that underlay heritage management and archaeological investigations. The week’s events will conclude at Ellice Schoolhouse on Sunday, October 17th 11:00 – 1:00. Come out to take a turn at collecting ground penetrating radar data and an up-close look at 3D laser scanning. Copies of Ellice Schoolhouse historic documents and photographs will be available for the public to take a more in-depth look into the history of Millis and learn how they can help contribute to the ongoing preservation of our town’s heritage.
