Article Body:

Emily Arthur and Mary Dougherty of Cadette Troop 72293 in Natick earned their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award represents the highest achievement a Cadette level Girl Scout can earn. It demonstrates extraordinary leadership through a sustainable and measurable take action project. These girls showed dedication, commitment, and perseverance in making change in their community.
When deciding what issue the girls wanted to address they felt they could help educate families who use the food pantry about healthy food options. The key to their project was to put together recipes using commonly donated food items. They worked very closely with Joanne Akie the co-director of “A Place to Turn” here in Natick. They wrote their cookbook in both English and Spanish, which also featured nutritional facts. Each month they had a food drive. With the food they collected they made meal bags that included all the ingredients for one of their recipes featured in their cookbook. They would then spend time passing out their meal bags and speaking with families at the food pantry about making healthy food choices and the limitations they might have.
