Holliston to Commemorate Fallen Veterans May 29th

Issue Date:

Article Body:

Memorial Day services are a town sponsored event, run by the Holliston Memorial Day Committee, according to Steve Bradford, a member of the 2017 Holliston Memorial Day Committee. This committee is appointed each year by the Selectmen on recommendations from the American Legion and VFW posts (3 members of each post). The town pays a portion of the day’s costs with the balance split by the two veterans’ posts.
Thursday May 25th is the start of preparation for Memorial Day. Veterans Squares are decorated with a flag and geraniums, and veterans’ graves in the outlying cemeteries are dressed in the morning and early afternoon by members of the Memorial Day Committee. At 5 p.m., Veterans and members of the town’s Scout troops meet at the VFW parking lot, 310 Woodland Street to go to St Mary’s and Lake Grove Cemeteries to dress the Veterans Graves in those cemeteries. This is followed by a Flag disposal service led by VFW Chaplain George Snow.
On Monday, May 29th, Veterans will meet at the VFW parking lot at 9 a.m. to ready for services at Lake Grove and St. Mary’s cemeteries. The parade will step off at 11 a.m. from 310 Woodland Street., leading to the steps of Holliston Town Hall. A collation will be served at the Holliston Historical Society after the parade for participants.
