Holliston Parks & Recreation Teacher Spotlight: Doug Keough

Issue Date:
January, 2017
Article Body:

A self-taught artist, Doug Keough has been a private art instructor for the past twelve years. As a commissioned, freelance artist, he specializes in photo-realistic portraits.
Beginning in graphite and charcoal, Doug quickly honed his sketching abilities at an early age. He soon advanced to pastel portraits, and by the age of 18, regularly sold commissions of people, their cars and animals. As he immersed himself in the medium, Doug noticed that pastel work often has a rough, unblended look. As he evolved, Doug developed a smooth blended style that is instantly recognizable in his work today.
A move from Boston to Miami brought an opportunity to paint portraits on a large scale. Doug worked as a portrait artist for the Barton G. events company, in South Florida. Painting celebrity portraits onto large murals, he was able to create artwork for many Miami events, including the Latin Grammies.
When he moved back to Boston to start a family, Doug began teaching private lessons in 2003. Working in all age groups, he teaches his simple process for sketching, with the techniques for blended pastel paintings.
Doug has developed an easy, repeatable methodology that enables students of all skill levels to create realistic pictures. His students are taught everything from selecting materials, to displaying the finished artwork, utilizing easy-to-learn techniques.
Doug will be teaching teen, adult & youth classes including Sketching 101, Airbrush & Pastels. Classes begin Wednesday and Thursday January 11 & 12 at the Parks & Recreation building. See our full flyer and register on-line at www.townofholliston.us/parks-recreation or contact us at (508) 429-2149.
