Looking to take a long walk this spring? How about uniting with Norwood and Massachusetts residents to assist those who are left hungry every day? Here is an opportunity to make a difference! This is the ninth year that Norwood will be represented in the Project Bread Walk for Hunger. The event takes place on Sunday, May 6. For more information, visit www.profectbread.org/walkforhunger.
This town has been well represented in this national fundraiser, and again, they are looking for local help to join forces and raise money for those in need. Last year, the Norwood Food Pantry Walk for Hunger Team raised $9,385 with just seven walkers. They would like to beat their 2017 benefit, and Norwood residents can help...but participating and/or donating!
Project Bread's Walk for Hunger occurs on the first Sunday in May and has been a Massachusetts tradition for over 45 years and generated more than $100 million since its inception, and will help 726,000 residents who struggle to put food on their tables. Nationally, it is the country's oldest continual pledge walk and the largest one-day fundraiser for alleviating hunger.
The 20-mile walk offers a rally start throughout Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Cambridge. More than 40,000 walkers and 2,000 volunteers take to the streets and unify their efforts in an event that will make significant differences in the lives, cupboards, refrigerators and tables of many Massachusetts residents.
Walkers can pledge to complete the entire course, but also have the option to walk as few as two miles, five miles, ten miles, whatever is comfortable. There is also free transportation back to the Boston Common at nine checkpoints located along the route. There is also water, first aid and toilet facilities available throughout the route and music lining the streets adds refreshed energy to those generous walkers.
Other options include raising donations as a virtual walker, or for those that prefer a faster pace, there is a Walk for Hunger 5K Run, which begins at 7 a.m. The event is open to adults, teens and youths.
Norwood captain Nick Campagna as been walking for almost 30 years and began his quest at age 42 when his homeless uncle was able to receive shelter and food from the Pine Street Inn. Campagna warmly welcomes new walkers to the Norwood team.
