It took Natick resident Pamela Powers seven years to complete the musical, “Once in a Blue Moon,” but rehearsals are now underway. The play, with original music and choreographed dance for 11 children, ages 9 through 18, from Natick and surrounding towns, will make its debut on Oct. 27 and 28 at Natick’s Common Street Spiritual Center, 13 Common St. Though children are the stars of the show, the humor and message will be appreciated by all ages.
The play is about the “interconnection of everything, nature and inner self, and looking to your own heart for love,” Pamela explained. “It’s a profound message for all ages coming out of the mouths of babes. It took me a long time to find out in life, that the love I’ve looked for, I already possessed. I hope that I conveyed that realization in this project, so children could realize that they are the love they are looking for. I just want to encourage them. It doesn’t matter where you start; it’s where you finish that you have control over.”
“It’s a story of children who go to camp on a farm where the animals are the counselors,” Pamela said.
Working with husband-songwriter Theodore Powers, Pamela wrote 11 songs and choreographed tap dance for the children to perform. Caroline Waters, Common Street music director, will teach the children their songs. Theodore, along with other musicians, will accompany the children during the performance.
“Kids can do as much as you give them,” Pamela noted.
Melding Life-Long
Passions
“I think my husband Theo is such an amazing songwriter, and I love teaching dance, choreographing and working with children, so it occurred to me that it would be a perfect fit,” Pamela said. “We’ve worked together on a few small projects, and I loved it. So I asked him if he would be willing to write the music if I wrote a musical. He laughed, and said, ‘yes.’ That was seven years ago, so I’m not sure he really thought I would do it. But here we are, and he did a wonderful job!”
Pamela is passionate about dance, especially tap. A flight attendant for Delta for 30 years, Pamela traveled to different cities, which allowed her to study with legendary greats as well as teach tap in the U.S., England, and Germany. She has been teaching at the Broadway Bound Dance Center in Natick for 11 years and has a home dance studio where she gives private lessons.
Her husband has a career in music as a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger. Theodore is also a tap dancer, and has performed throughout the U.S., Montreal, and France. He teaches voice at the Life Experience School in Millis.
