The holiday spirit spread like wildfire at Medway Middle School, when Taylor Benner, who just turned 13 on Thanksgiving, shared an idea with his classmates – to send Carlos Rolon, a little boy awaiting a heart transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital, cards for Christmas.
Taylor’s Mom, a nurse at Children’s Hospital in Waltham, had heard about Carlos and shared the news with Taylor. In fact, Carlos, who has had four open heart surgeries since he was two and must remain in the hospital, had made his hope for Christmas cards sent to him at the hospital apparent with some calls in the broadcast media and on YouTube.
“My Mom told me about Carlos when she got back from work in the morning,” said Taylor. “And I thought it would be a good idea to make cards for him so he would have a good Christmas. He wanted to make sure Santa will know where he is.”
“He thought it would be a great idea to ask his teacher if his friends at school could make a card, too,” said his grandmother, Marisol.
“Taylor asked if we could make cards, and his idea spread from his homeroom through the school. There were many students and teachers who were happy to contribute to creating a wonderland of cards for Carlos. In a few days, we were able to fill a beautifully wrapped box to the brim with cards for Carlos!” said Lisa Konieczna, or “Mrs. K.,” Taylor’s teacher at Medway Middle School.
“It feels good,” said Taylor, “and Mrs. K said they would like to do this every year, or something like it, for someone.
