Millis Reads About Race in America

Issue Date:
February, 2017
Article Body:

Started in 2013 as a joint venture of the Millis Public Library and Millis Public Schools, Millis Reads is an effort to strengthen ties throughout the Millis community by encouraging everyone in town to read and discuss the same book. This year’s Millis Reads is going to be a little different. Instead of focusing on a single book, Millis Reads 2017 will focus on a topic and encourage everyone in town to explore that topic in whatever way works for them.
The Millis Public Library is excited to announce that the topic for Millis Reads 2017 is Race in America.
To facilitate exploration of this critical topic, the Library will be hosting a film series, a speaker series, open discussion groups, a tour of local stops on the underground railroad, and a field trip to the Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail in Boston. Additionally, the Library is providing copies of a number of excellent and accessible books concerning race, including the National Book Award-winning graphic novel trilogy March, by Representative John Lewis, the National Book Award-winning novel Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead, the National Book Award-winning memoir Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the Newbery Medal-winning picture book Last Stop on Market Street, by Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson, Small Great Things, by Jodi Picoult, and Citizen, by Claudia Rankin, among others.
