Back in March, the Norwood cheerleading team packed their bags and made the trip south to Walt Disney World, in Orlando, FL, to compete in the National Cheerleading Championship for the first time in five years. The Mustangs were hoping this year’s attendance in the championship would provide much better results than the last time they were there. According to Norwood Head Cheerleading Coach Crystal Salisbury, the team didn’t get out of the preliminaries during their last visit.
The tournament took place over two days in the sun of Florida with the team’s lowest score being dropped. Norwood ran into some trouble the first day and finished 5th out of the 8 teams participating, but day two was a totally different outcome. The Mustangs, who had missed a few stunts the day before, nailed their performance on day two and grabbed a third place finish.
When asked about the team’s third place finish at the Nationals, Coach Salisbury was somewhat shocked.
“Honestly I was very surprised at our finish, Salisbury said. "Competing against seven other medium sized varsity programs I was hoping anything but dead last. Going into the tournament it was hard to predict how we’d do. You don’t know anything about the teams you are going up against; you’re going in blind.”
While the Coach was glad the team didn’t finish last, the girls were totally shocked that they took third place overall. Although not expecting to have such good luck in Orlando, the Norwood Cheerleading team will definitely take it.
