In early February, the Norwood Fire Department jumped into action to save two residents from an apartment fire. The call came in from neighbors at 131 Norwest Dr., at 2:47 a.m. reporting the fire. Norwood trucks arrived four short minutes later to find smoke issuing from the roof of the apartment unit. Norwood firefighters forced entry into the home to find heavy smoke with zero visibility. The engine company members immediately went to work and retained the kitchen fire in minutes. The ladder company initiated a primary search of the second floor while Engine 3 members located two unconscious residents in the first floor living room.
Both unresponsive victims received medical attention outside the apartment by Norwood Fire BLS and ALS ambulance crews. Once stabilized, the patients were taken to Norwood Hospital and Mass General Hospital. At press time, both victims, now at Mass. General Hospital, were listed in serious but stable condition.
Within a few hours, Norwood Fire cleared the scene after hitting hotspots and checking for fire extension. Norwood Fire Investigators and the State Fire Marshall's Office are investigating the cause of the fire. NFD Captain George Morrice estimated damage at approximately $75,000.
Throughout the incident, Westwood and Walpole Fire Departments assisted on scene while Walpole also provided station coverage.
