Students Mentor Younger Students in Millis

Collaborations between HS Chemistry Club and Grade 3 Team

On October 21, 2016, the members of the Millis High School Chemistry Club, under the direction of Stephanie Copice, celebrated National Chemistry Week by heading into the grade three classrooms at the Clyde F. Brown Elementary school and running interactive lessons for the students around weather phenomenon. The Chemistry Club is in its inaugural year and is comprised of Juniors and Seniors at the high school. The mission statement includes sharing a love of chemistry with others, and when the high school students were brainstorming ways of doing this, working with the elementary school seems a natural fit.
The high school students worked to create hands on lessons for the third graders on convection currents in the atmosphere, beach erosion, rain formation, and fog formation, including assessment and follow up. They worked with third graders for most of the morning.
The high school students, upon reflection, were amazed at how receptive the grade 3 students were, as well as the engagement level. The teachers were impressed with how the high school students adapted the lesson for each group for students who came into the room to incorporate information learned in the previous session
The chemclub is working with the grade 3 teaching team to bring the younger students into the high school lab for a more in depth experience.
