Sometimes a book is just so good, you just have to talk about it! Or, it presents controversial topics that opens up discussions that could last for hours.
The Town of Norwood appears to embrace that love of reading, offering no shortage of book clubs that will appeal to all ages and interests. Below are some great examples of book clubs hosted by the Morrill Memorial Library and other organizations throughout Town.
Pick a group (or start your own), grab the book, and get reading!!
Maguire Housing Book Club
This book club is small and intimate in size, but will surely keep its participants interested. It meets the second Wednesday of the month and explored a variety of books, including: ‘The Language of Flowers,’ by Vanessa Diffenbaugh,’ Little Bee,’ by Chris Cleave, ‘One Good Dog,’ by Susan Wilson, and the classic, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ by Harper Lee.
Titles on Tap
This social group is for readers in their 20s and 30s, and the young at heart. They also have taken their meetings on the road and meet at Napper Tandy’s, the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 7:30 p.m.
For those who prefer their stories shaken, not stirred, this is the group to join!
First Thursday Book Club
This is an adult book group that meets the first Thursday of the month, 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., February through May, and October through December.
Books ‘n’ Bites
This young adult book club is for students in 7th through 12 grade. Their January discussion was ‘The Hundreds Lies of Lizzie Lovett,’ by Chelsea Sedoti. Turn the Page
This relatively new adult book group was organized by a team of library staff members. It meets the third Wednesday of every month (except January), at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Copies of the books are available in a variety of formats and available at the circulation desk.
Fireside Reads/Beach Reads
There are many other resources, however, that can truly open up a world of literary experiences and modify someone's love of reading: the librarians. These dedicated, avid readers possess an incredible and diverse knowledge of books, and Norwood is lucky to have them at our disposal.
Two of the Morrill Memorial librarians provide a fun and highly entertaining avenue to share their reading knowledge and repertoire of great books through Fireside and Beach Reads. Twice per year, typically in January and June, Norwood librarians conduct a review of a variety of titles to enlighten Norwood readers.
The session includes an eclectic assortment of reading materials, such as biographies, history, fiction, travel, mystery, and usually a cookbook or two highlight the selections. Some books are new releases, but some can be those hidden gems readers may overlook or never discover.
Sharing is also a large part of the morning or evening session, not only by the presenters, but those in the audience. This program is informative, often amusing and a fabulous chapter in the search for the next good read!
Book Club Kits
Looking for something a little more personal? Why not start your own book club! The Morrill Memorial Library can assist to get you started with their Book Club Kits! They offer 19 different kits, each containing ten books, an author’s biography, and book club questions to get the conversation going.
For those who are already in an established book club, the library also provides a Book Club List of excellent choices that will spark great discussions!
