Most people have “stuff” that they no longer need—furniture, housewares, sports equipment, musical instruments, books, toys and games—but can’t bear to throw away because it is still good quality. Other people would love to get an amazing deal on similar stuff—or have the chance to win unexpected items like sports memorabilia or local services.
All of those people are in luck, because the Holliston High School Class of 2017 Senior Auction and Bazaar is coming up on Columbus Day. On Monday, October 10, the HHS field house and more will be filled with merchandise for sale in a huge indoor yard sale-style market—and brand new items will be available to win through auction or raffle.
The Senior Auction is a long-standing tradition, a way for the current graduating class to begin their senior year working as a team toward raising money to defray costs for expenses such as caps and gowns, the senior trip, prom, and the class gift to the school. Preparation for the event begins as early as the end of junior year, when students begin picking up donations and filling storage spaces with the merchandise that will be sold or auctioned.
“Working on the pick-up committee has been a lot of work, but I’ve had so much fun doing it,” says senior Sam Ratcliffe. “Working that hard with your classmates, all trying to achieve the same goal really brings everyone together in a positive way. As the class treasurer, I find it very important that the Auction is successful, and I’m so thankful for everybody’s hard work, as well as the generosity of everyone in the community.”
That work will continue through auction day, when all hands will be on deck to organize the merchandise and work with customers. As class secretary Betsy Hamre says, “The auction has a job for everyone, whether it be moving heavy furniture, auctioning off items, or simply organizing and cleaning the items for display!”
Although storage spaces are already too full for volunteers to continue doing pick-ups, the class will be accepting drop-off donations at the event site the Saturday prior to the auction. Volunteers will accept Items at Holliston High School on Saturday, October 8, 8:00 AM –
2:00 p.m. A list of items the class can and is unable to accept may be found at http://hhsseniorauction.blogspot.com.
Details on auction day include the following:
The Yard Sale/Bazaar is open 9:00 AM–2:00 PM. General admission is $5—or $25 for Early Bird Admission at 8:00 AM for first selection.
The Live Auction starts at 9:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day, featuring a selection of the best offerings from among the paintings, musical instruments, antiques, etc. available.
Silent Auction bidding is conducted throughout the day, and closes at 1:30 p.m. It will include such items as gift baskets and gift cards, new merchandise, services, and more.
