On August 3rd, in Medway, Mass., a group of local residents will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Esther Day--a holiday about love of friends and family that began in 2010.
Esther Grace Earl was friends with John Green, YA author. When she was turning 16 and very sick with thyroid cancer, John and his brother Hank said they would celebrate whatever topic she chose each year on her August 3rd birthday. She said she'd like to celebrate the love between friends and families--to make it a day to say "I love you" to the people we care about the most. Just 3 weeks later, Esther died. John wrote his book The Fault in our Stars, and dedicated it to Esther Earl, calling her his inspiration. #EstherDay has been celebrated every year since then, making this the 10th one. Even Sesame Street and MTV have tweeted about it!
The celebration will take place in Medway--at the Thayer Homestead, on August 3rd, from 6-9 p.m. Esther's family lived in that house when Esther was in elementary school, so it seems like the perfect venue for this celebration. The event will feature food, music, a caricature artist, face painting, and the opportunity to create a card to give to someone you love.
