Ashland residents of all ages are stepping up to help each other in many different ways during this time of COVID-19. Ashland High 10th grader Pam DaSilva set up a table, where people can donate an item or take an item, in front of her home at 12 Hilldale Rd. She keeps the table outside each day, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“Because of the quarantine, many people are unemployed and are having a difficult time supporting their family,” DaSilva said. “My family and I have prepared a donation stand in front of our house where people can pass by, leave food and/or supplies, while also being able to take anything they’re in need of.”
“Donated items can simply be left in the boxes near the table, while insuring no contact with anyone. In these difficult times, we are looking to unite as a community and help each other.”
On another side of town, outside their home at 368 chestnut St., Mirella Manhaes and her family also have a table. “The good thing is that we are on sort of a main road,” she said. They are “open” from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We ask for cleaning supplies and non-perishable items. We know how hard it is for lots of families around us. We’ve been in similar positions in the past, and would like to help in any way we can. But, just to emphasize, Pam is the one who had the idea. She is one of my son’s best friends at the high school.”
“We have lived in this community for almost two decades with two kids in the APS, and we decided as a family to help our community and show our appreciation and support that was given to us. It is time to give back to the people in this town.”
“We know that the food pantry is open as well, and we will put a note asking people to try their luck there if they can’t find something they want.”
