For the past three seasons, the King Philip girl’s lacrosse team has ventured into the Division 1 East Tournament but has never gotten past the second round. During the span, the Warriors have compiled a 33-25 regular season record only to fall in the first round to Framingham in 2014 and Franklin in 2015. After finally beating Westford Academy in the first round last year, they found themselves on the short end of the stick in the Quarter Final round to Lincoln Sudbury.
Having graduated 8 seniors from last year, Coach Julie Boudreau is hoping to install confidence in the young players in the gaps left by the seniors.
“We are not in a rebuilding year, we are a young and coachable team that works very hard,” the Warrior coach said. “We have a deep bench with many sophomores and will be looking to run lines and sub regularly to keep everyone fresh. Our theme for the season is Grit = Hard Work + Passion.”
Junior captain Katie Crowther will be looked upon to run the offense. The junior, who has been a starter since her freshman campaign, was the Warrior’s leading point scorer last spring and now has over 140 career goals and 170 career points. So far in King Philip’s first three games of the season she has scored at least three goals and as high as five.
Another intricate part of the KP attack will be senior captains Angela Vellante and Meghan Wagner. Vellante, the team’s assist leader last year, has been a starter for the past 2 years and is considered by Boudreau as the squad’s quarterback on the attack. Wagner is returning to the team after a two year absence.
“Meghan has been injured for the past two years and will be an impact player for us on attack,” Coach Boudreau said. “She was a starter her freshmen year and scored every game for us and we are looking forward to her returning this year.”
Midfielders Caroline Klim, Alli Meehan, Victoria and Olivia Tormey and Dana Truini are all well rounded sophomores who will work to fill in the roles of the graduated seniors. Thus far Meehan, Truini and Klim have all been scoring in each game this year and will be running the midfield. According to the coach, Olivia Tormey has also been playing a strong role on attack as well.
Protecting the goal will be sophomore Caroline Watson and in front of her will be the strong defensive unit of juniors Molly Mullins, Christina Hathaway and Izzy Agricola.
Coach Boudreau will also have some assistance this year on the sidelines as her sister, Mary Pasquantonio, who has experience taking the draw and specializing in coaching it, will be working with the three or four girls who will be rotating on the draw for the Warriors.
With the season already underway and the Warriors looking good through their first three games Boudreau’s goal is to once again make the tournament.
“Realistically our goal is to once again make the tournament,” she said. “We are also striving to be the Hock Champs. The league is strong this year and we are working to develop our game as a team, but I see us having a winning record in the Hock.”
